When I purchase creams and whites for use in painting, dyeing, printing or even just for labels I use a fine tipped sharpie marker to label the selvage edge, taking note: what is the fabric 100% cotton or a blend, does it have a name so I can by more later on, where purchased. I tend to use a lot of drapery linings as fabric for dyeing and there are some I like better than others. I don’t have to trust my memory if the info is written on the fabric.
