If you want to let the fabric work for you in appliqué patterns, just invert the template. Make a window template by cutting the shape out of a sheet of paper or thin card stock (use a dark color paper if the fabric is a lighter color). You can use this template as a preview tool to see how a certain area of the fabric will look when cut into that shape. This is a great method to use with hand dyed fabrics and batiks to find just the perfect portion of the fabric to use for certain effects. Collect these window templates in shapes that you use most often in a folder so they’re always handy.
